COLLISION AND FIRE S.S. SEA WITCH U.S. COAST GUARD TRAINING FILM 78724:

After the fiery wreck on Coney Island, the Sea Witch was towed to the Brooklyn Navy Yard where the intention was to rebuild the ship. She sat in drydock for quite some time, while a legal matter about the failed steering system on the Sea Witch took many years to resolve. Eventually the damaged forward portion of the Sea Witch was cut away, leaving only the valuable back portion of the ship. The stern remained in the drydock while another barge was built in the same drydock. During the floating and removal of the new barge, the Sea Witch lifted off her keel blocks and everything went, quite literally, sideways. You can read more about it and my dad’s involvement by checking out this Wikimapia entry…. scroll down to comments from a user named Richard, to read about Dad’s work.

This is a drawing of the Sea Witch as she sat when Dad first went to take a look at her. The insert shows the Multicell Buoyancy Assist Module that was used in the refloating of the stern of the ship. The drawing was done by Bob Johnson, an artist who did a lot of work for my father during his ship salvage career days.
